About Ian...

I formed Ian Taylor Gardens in 1996 having previously worked for a garden maintenance company in Bosham and before that as an Assistant Nature Warden on Heyshott Down, a SSSI Nature Reserve, near Midhurst.

I gained my practical qualifications in Conservation, Chainsaw operation and Tree Surgery along with certificates for Mini Digger machine operator and Use of Pesticides at Brinsbury College in 1990. Prior to that I studied Fine Art as part of a Humanities Degree in the mid 80s at the University of Glamorgan.

In 1995 I started working at Sculpture at Goodwood as a Groundsman and Sculpture Technician working with a number of notable sculptors including Stephen Cox, Richard Deacon and Andy Goldsworthy. During this time I also worked as an assistant to Ivan Hicks, Garden Designer and Land Artist, a former Head Gardener at West Dean Gardens.

We worked all over the South of England creating amazing gardens. These included a school garden in Stoke Newington to a Therapy Garden for St.Leonards Hospital near Hastings as well as many private commissions. Most notably I assisted for several years with the installation of several woodland gardens in The Enchanted Forest at Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells. These were regularly featured on TV and in national newspapers and magazines such as The Times, The Guardian and Gardens Illustrated.

During this time I was building up my garden maintenance and landscaping business locally.

As an experienced hedge trimming contractor I was asked by Limehurst to join their team in 1999. Limehurst harvests and processes Yew hedge clippings for use in anti-cancer pharmaceuticals. I trimmed Yew hedges and topiary in the gardens of stately homes and cottage gardens as well as parks and bowling greens. I carried out this work every summer for 15 years with some of the clients continuing to be my customers to this day for my landscaping and garden maintenance services.

Recent projects include creating a complete cottage garden, including a wildflower meadow, garden paths and driveway.

Our friendly, experienced, hardworking team...

We are a friendly, experienced hardworking team and I am very much 'hands on' directing the projects from the ground, and always on-site to liaise with clients. I work with a collective of skilled local tradespeople from ground workers to tree surgeons providing an experienced team to fulfil the vision of your project.

I offer a consultation and design service to advise on planting and offer creative solutions to outdoor living combining imaginative design with practicality.

All trees and plants we supply are locally sourced to reduce our carbon footprint. Ian Taylor Gardens are proud of our annual tree and hedge planting record, often numbering thousands, which contribute towards our environmental credentials as a climate positive company.

We welcome new creative projects. The more imaginative the better!
